Spuds go down in rugged encounter

13th May 2025

Guyra faces Tingha in a big challenge at the New Red Hill this Saturday and will need to overcome some bruises from last week’s trip to Glen Innes.
A rugged encounter in A grade saw the Super Spuds fall to a 14-nil deficit at halftime, with errors handing the home side some cheap points, but last-ditch defence saving it from being a worse score-line.
The second half was much better with Dan Vidler brushing off tacklers to score for Guyra a few minutes after the break.
At 14-6 the Spuds were back in it but needed to maintain their momentum.
Time after time they pushed into the Glen red-zone but couldn’t find the decisive play.
At the other end Glen threatened a few times, but the Guyra defence held firm.
In the end neither side could post any more points and it finished 14-6.
A number of injuries hampered the Guyra effort, but it was another solid display with Chad Dewson impressing again, both in the centres and then in the pack.
He was players’ player and a clear three pointer winner for the club.
Dan Vidler took two points and Robert Sisson one, while a number of others stood tall in a physical, defensive slog.
Earlier the Spudettes went into their game with only 12 players and it proved too much of a disadvantage.
Once fatigue set in the home side ran in four tries in the first half and added three more in the second.
Tully Landsborough got one back for Guyra late in the game, but it finished 34-4.
The points went to Danielle Sutton (3), Kiarna Landsborough (2) and Katie Ahoy (1), while Kiarna also got the most players’ player votes.
Tingha comes to Guyra as competition leaders in both grades on Saturday and the Guyra teams will need every bit of home support at the ground to help reverse the results of the trip to Tingha just three weeks ago.
