Great weekend of junior soccer

02nd Aug 2019

Guyra Junior soccer teams took to the field this week in Armidale, Uralla and Guyra for a great day of soccer in beautiful weather. The teams enjoyed their return to the field after a few weeks off and there was some quality soccer being played.
This Saturday, 3rd of August, will be a big one for the Guyra United Soccer Club with every team taking to the fields in Guyra for the first time this season. Our Old Boys Fundraiser for Darryl Dowden will also take place this weekend with proceeds from the Junior Canteen and Coffee sales (CJs Coffee Co.) being donated. We will be holding a 100 Club and a Guessing Competition on the day. The refurbished Canteen will also re-open this weekend with some special offers including Casper Cupcakes! And to top things off, we will be debuting our new junior jerseys, which are being distributed at training this week, so expect a sea of bright orange on the Guyra Recreation fields this weekend.
Team nominations are currently open for the Jack Vallance Junior Memorial Carnival to be held in Armidale on Sunday 11th of August. Nominations close this Saturday so please speak to your Coach or contact me on 0428747072 for further information or to express your interest. See you all for an exciting home round!
Under 6 Spooks - Our youngest Guyra team are always great to watch, full of enthusiasm and excitement. Despite the few weeks off the Spooks had a solid first game back. Corey Banfield scored the first goal for Guyra in the first minute of the game and the goals kept coming for the team. A total of 14 goals were scored by these youngsters for the morning. A great all-round effort.
Under 7 Jellybeans - Saturday saw the local derby between the two Guyra under 7’s teams. It was a great friendly atmosphere with spectators cheering for all the children.
Lachlan C is showing more confidence in having a go and kicking the ball while Oskar demonstrated his willingness to counter attack and take on the opposition. As always Tyrell worked tirelessly in defence and saved many goals. Taearliegh was our only goal scorer this week adding another two to her growing tally.
Rose is improving every week, Lachie E-C continues to be hell bent on being our striker taking shots at goal whenever possible. Hamish’s ball skills are coming along well, his quick kick-ins often see positive results.
Thank you to our special guest coach Dave, Oskar’s Dad, who ran with the kids in the second half.
Under 12 Spirits - This week’s game was an important one for the Spirits with their 3rd place on the ladder being challenged by the 4th place DK team. With players to spare this week the biggest challenge was giving the player’s game time. Guyra opened the scoring within minutes of the kick-off with a well-placed goal by Cooper Reeves set up by Jason Mowbray. This was followed soon after by a well-deserved goal to Ella Vidler. Guyra dominated the game with great defence by Joe Reeves, Leigha McElroy and Ryan Saunders keeping the ball in our half. Cooper soon added another goal to take the score to 3-0. DK took advantage of a rare break in the defensive line to score their first goal shortly before half-time. This spurred DK on to take further shots at goal but some great saves by goalie Angus Dullaway, including a great touch over the top of the goals, kept them out until seconds before half time when DK added another goal. This left the score at 3–2 to Guyra at the break.
Cooper kept his goal-scoring tally ticking over within the first 2 minutes with another well-timed shot finding the net followed a little while later by his 4th goal for the game. Defence was the aim for the rest of the game but the pressure was on when DK scored a third goal followed soon after by a 4th. Tensions were high on the sideline and everyone was very relieved to hear the whistle with the final score 5-4 to Guyra. It was a great team effort with everyone contributing. Special mention to Daniel Grills who returned to the field for the first time after injuring his foot and was unstoppable on the wing, making numerous runs up the sideline and taking some great shots at goal. Charlie Wilson also played well this week, taking on numerous positions throughout the game. With the 12B’s being re-graded this week, it will be interesting to see what the rest of the competition brings.
