3rd grade had their final game of the season on Saturday and under difficult conditions they cooked! Both physically and through a stellar display of masterful hockey. Down on numbers, meant plenty of running was required and with a match-time of 1:30pm it was very hot out on the pitch. Thank you to the few 2nd graders who helped us out again.
Some pre-match miscommunications had committed team member Emily Evans, (out on injury) arriving as a spectator and winding up in goals. Emily and Nat Hope were off for the first quarter kitting up the last-minute goalie so Guyra started with 7 players (& no goalie) v 11 young, fit and fast TAS girls with 3-4 rolling subs. This meant we had to hit hard on the attack and play offensively from the get-go.
In a seemingly impossible situation the Shamrocks and their impeccable teamwork shone, chalking up their first goal with a ‘one-two’ combo in the circle, ultimately popping in off the stick of Susie Crawford.
The second quarter, now thankfully with a goalie and desperately needed extra player still saw us heavily outnumbered by the opposition, but Kate Mathews and her ‘thou shalt not falter’ attitude was rewarded by driving in a second goal. Unfortunately, Kate’s husband (Justin) the team’s number one supporter (having attended every single game armed with jelly snakes) missed bearing witness to this celebratory occasion by stepping away for mere moments at exactly the wrong time.
Brooke, who definitely covered the most ground throughout the match, pelted the next one in before TAS managed a few sneaky goals to equalise.
The coordinated defence through the backs and goalie was on impressive display – holding off a threatening opposition.
While TAS’ spirits were buoyed by their successful turnaround, Guyra wasn’t done!! With their never-die attitude and known for doing their best work under pressure, Guyra lifted again and Jo slammed one more in with 5minutes to go culminating in a 4-3 win.
All in all, it has been a very enjoyable season and it was great to finish on a high.
2nd grade played their last game of the season on Saturday evening. After trying to convince the young, fit and fast Albies team to forfeit and have a beer instead, the game was all Guyra. The team did indeed have to “pin their ears back and go” (Aimee Lenehan) as it was a fast-paced game.
Notable performances from Anna Heagney and Liz Mackie and some very unlucky shots from the strikers. Jo Mackie scored two beautiful goals setting Guyra up for a 2-0 win. After two hard games on Saturday for some players, muscle cramps were contagious in the last few minutes.
The final bell to a great year of hockey was very welcome. It should be noted Prue Post managed an entire season without a card, although there was a stern warning for our #12.
A huge thank you to the team, the committee, and our most dedicated supporter Rach, for a wonderful season, hope to see you all again next year!
