Successful season for Guyra hockey

Guyra Men’s A grade
26th Sep 2023

Guyra Shamrock Hockey Club would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all the committee members for a wonderful 2023 winter season. Guyra continues to maintain a strong membership managing to field an under 8s,under 11s, a combined 1st Grade Women’s team with United, 2nd Grade Women’s, 3rd Grade Women’s, A grade Men’s and two B Grade Men’s teams.
This would not be possible without the support of our sponsors the White Bull Hotel, New England Toyota, Top of the Range Shearing, Trent Mendes Earthmoving, Kelso Services, First Flush, Glenavon Angus and Hanlons. Their support has enabled us to compete as a professional club with new uniforms, training equipment to improve our skills, and essential equipment to keep our members safe. We look forward to their ongoing support for the 2024 season. A special thank you Henry and Jess MacDougall who supplied all the sausages for the Grand Final BBQ.
Senior women’s hockey should be extremely proud of their season. Our 3rd Grade Women’s team welcomed new players, players who hadn’t taken the field in over 15 years and our seasoned members. The spirit of this team was all about fun, development, and plenty of laughs on and off the field.
It was a great relief to most to have a few young members to run the ball in the middle but most importantly everyone enjoyed our weekly catch-ups win or lose!!
Guyra 2nd Grade - what an amazing season to come away as Minor Premiers for 2023. The Grand Final saw our whole team finally come together and we were all thankful for the extra subs with the extreme heat around. It was a well-fought match that unfortunately didn’t go our way this year. Special mention must go to Emma Waugh who received the Player of the Grand Final awarded by the umpires. It was wonderful to be well supported by the Guyra Community who were out in force to cheer us all on.
Guyra/United 1st grade player Jodi Ellis scored in the final quarter for a 1-0 victory and for the team to be awarded the 2023 Winners. It was wonderful that two clubs could come together to build a 1st-grade team with the main focus on helping junior members develop in a supportive environment. We couldn’t be prouder that this team became stronger as the season progressed and then go on to win. Well done to all the members.
Guyra Shamrocks men were once again was one of the largest contributions to the Hockey New England Men’s Competition. It was great to see new faces, many playing for the first time and able to be competitive. One of the B Grade teams made the Grand Final coming away as Minor Premiers losing to TAS in extra time. Special mention to Angus Langsmith who was awarded the Player of the Grand Final and Henry Youman named under 21 Goal Keeper for 2023. A Grade made it to the grand final and managed to unseat the reigning champions, City Hockey. This game was a credit to the team who have worked hard to finally take the title home.
Finally a huge thank you to the Hockey New England committee who volunteer to run this competition. The sportsmanship, camaraderie, and level of competition were a credit to the organisation and our club. We look forward to seeing our members and welcoming new players for the 2024 season.
